LPIRG Working Groups

Working Groups are collectives of students (and possibly community members) who work together on a public interest issue and have long-term goals. Groups may focus on research, events, action, publications, or other activities. Following is a an overview of current LPIRG Working Groups.

Campus Roots Cooperative Garden

The Campus Roots Cooperative Garden is located on the campus of the University of Lethbridge and was constructed by the Campus Roots Executive Committee and a large group of volunteers in April 2009. Campus Roots is committed to developing a cooperative garden on the University grounds that will unify students, staff, and faculty with a common goal of stimulating new sustainable alternatives for living and fresh new thinking. The campus community garden demonstrates a commitment to the U of L’s fundamental principles of designing and practicing environmentally sustainable and socially responsible programs.  This garden also reflects the attitudes and values that many students have towards the environment and the future.

A Campus Cooperative Garden will provide the University community with a way to learn gardening skills, including such techniques as drought-tolerant gardening, drip irrigation, companion planting, square-foot gardening etc. Demonstration gardens and workshops will be set up in each of these areas and more. The garden will provide a source of locally grown, inexpensive, organic produce, which will be shared among the garden members, with surpluses distributed to residence students or donated to local food banks. Participating in the planting and care of a cooperative garden will give the community an opportunity to learn about and value the connection between food, land, and community. The garden will also provide the university community with a place to gather, work together, share gardening information and experience, and build a sense of community.  As a whole, the campus cooperative garden will serve to encourage students to become more actively involved on campus and to promote healthy living.

CKXU

CKXU is a volunteer-run campus/community radio station that broadcasts live from the University of Lethbridge Student’s Union Building. CKXU is committed to “Showcasing, Promoting, and Enhancing Southern Alberta’s Diversity” through providing an intelligent, innovative, and entertaining alternative to the radio programming currently available in Lethbridge. CKXU offers a wide range of programming including an eclectic mix of musical programming, campus and world news, and a vast variety of special interest programming with topics ranging from international peace and sports to the LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender) scene of Lethbridge. We can be heard live on FM radio at 88.3FM and from our website at www.ckxu.com.

CKXU is Lethbridge’s only campus community radio station. It is a community focused, open access, volunteer driven organization that strives to broadcast relevant programming that is not broadcasted anywhere else. CKXU is committed to its mandate of “Showcasing, Promoting, and Enhancing Southern Alberta’s Diversity” through providing an intelligent, innovative, and entertaining alternative to the radio programming currently available in Lethbridge. LPIRG and CKXU share the common goal of getting students engaged both in their local community and with world issues. CKXU provides a forum for critical evaluation of organizations and political institutions, and encourages students and community members to get involved and make a difference.
